Summer Surf the Room

Let's talk a bit about Work the Room activities. My students love (and need) opportunities to get up and moving around the room. I try to include a Work the Room activity in our center routine as often as possible!

To set up a Work the Room center, place task cards on walls around the room. Put student recording sheets on clipboards and allow students to move around the room to complete the task cards. I set up expectations for this center at the beginning of the year - no talking, walking feet etc. Also, make sure students know where to place their recording sheets. For some reason, this has confused my students in the past.

I have created a summer-themed Work the Room product called Summer Surf the Room. Included are 3 literacy activities and 3 math activities.

Read the Room allows students move around the room and write summer words on their recording sheets. To provide differentiation, different versions of the picture task cards are available. Some cards require students to simply copy the word on their paper, while other cards are missing letter sounds that students will have to determine on their own.

Unscramble the Room allows students to look at a task card to unscramble the summer word. They then write the correct word on their paper. There are 2 versions of task cards available for this activity. One set is all CVC words and another set is simple summer words. Find the one that works best for you and your students!

Alphabetize the Room requires students to first copy down all the summer words they find around the room on the left side of their paper. Next, they put the words into alphabetical order on the right side of their paper. The answer sheets provided allow for some differentiation. Two sheets have 6 words on each page and one sheet has all 12 words on the same page.

This activity requires students to determine the missing numbers in each number bond and write that number on their paper. There are two sets of task cards provided with these activities. One set has only one number missing. The other set requires students to figure out all parts of the number bond by looking at the pictures.

Count the Room allows students to count the objects on each task card and write it on their paper. There are two sets of task cards. The first set has numbers to 20 and the second set has numbers to 30.

In this Add the Room activity, students match the number on their card to a number problem on their answer page. They use the pictures on the task card to help them solve the addition problem!

Summer Read the Room FREEBIE!

I cannot adequately put into words how much I love a read/work the room activity. First, the kids LOVE it. They get to move around the room and they love looking for the cards. I try to hide them a little bit for fun. Second, once the kids get the routine down, this center runs itself. My rules are that they don't talk to each other and they don't ask me to tell them where the cards are. Just keep looking. Also, they need to follow the regular rules of the classroom like using walking feet. Side note: I think it's been about 2 weeks since I had to remind anyone to use walking feet. Beautiful feeling.

I've created a summer-themed read the room activity for you to use with your students! Print out the cards, laminate, cut and hang around the room. Have your kiddos put an answer page on a clipboard and off they go! There are 2 answer pages, so you can have them start on different pages.

Oh, sweet sweet summer. I LOVE using summer-themed resources in my classroom. I really really do. Beach, pools, sunglasses, floats, picnics, bbq, and ice cream! Those are all beautiful things.

To celebrate the onset of summer,  I have created sweet-treat card games to help your students practice math and literacy skills, while still having fun!

What doesn't fit in with sweet summer treats?! Hot cocoa! This game is based on one of my favorite classic games, "Old Maid." The object of the game is to get the most pairs. One card does not have a  partner, so the player who ends up with that card will lose the game. Students will match the cards according to rhyme.

Laminate these pages of CVC cards so that students can use a dry-erase marker to write letters in the sound boxes. Students will write the sounds they hear when they say the name of the picture on each log. They will then record the words on the record sheet.
